HISTORY OVERVIEW

Ober Mountain started as the Gatlinburg Ski Resort in 1962 and has since created memories for millions of visitors as Tennessee’s only ski area! Over 60 years of being the ultimate winter destination for skiers and snowboarders.

  • Before it was Ober Gatlinburg the Downtown building area was “The Hemlock Motel.” Most of the motel was torn down in 1972 when construction on the tram began. Some of it still stands as a part of the Tramway Mall and the Administrative Offices.
  • The Mountain Lodge building was Gatlinburg Ski Resort. The main lodge building still stands today. It also had a detached Ice Rink located near where the existing Maintenance Building is, two chairlifts and one rope tow.
  • Gatlinburg Ski Resort opened as a private club in December of 1962. It was one of the first ski resorts in the South.
  • Until 1973, skiers wound their way by car slowly and precariously up and down snow-covered Mount Harrison to reach Gatlinburg Ski Resort.
  • The Aerial Tramway was designed, engineered, and constructed by the Transportation Division of Von Roll, LTD. of Berne, Switzerland.
  • Construction on the Aerial Tramway started in September 1972 to connect downtown and the ski resort. The Tramway began operation on August 5, 1973.
  • After the tram’s opening in 1973, Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway and Gatlinburg Ski Resort were still two separate companies owned and operated by two different entities.

  • In 1975 the Anders Family purchased the assets and sub-leased the Gatlinburg Ski Resort area from The Gatlinburg Ski Corp.
  • The Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway and the Gatlinburg Ski Resort merged in the mid 1970’s and was incorporated in 1977 as “Ober Gatlinburg, Inc.”
  • Founder Claude Anders asked then Ski Director Rolf Lanz to come up with a name that would be in keeping with the Bavarian architecture and theme of the existing Ski Area. In German, Ober means “upper”, “top of”, “over”, or “above.”
  • There have been several rides and attractions on the mountain since 1977 including a circus, bungee jump tower, a Velcro wall, and a Go-Kart track.
  • The Mall, which currently contains the Ice Rink and retail shops, was constructed in 1980/1981 and opened to the public in 1982.

  • Installation of new cabins was completed May 4, 2007.
  • The Snow Tubing Park was constructed in 2008 and opened to the public in January of 2009.
  • The Terrain Park opened in 2009. This features several rails, boxes, and jumps for freestyle snow sports.
  • Before it became Seasons of Ober, the restaurant was originally the Old Heidelberg Castle and featured a German-style dinner show year-round.
  • The Ski Mountain Coaster was added in September 2015.
  • Ice Bumper Cars opened in May 2018.
  • Summer Tubing and the Rock Wall opened in May 2019.
  • In the Fall of 2022 Ober Gatlinburg sold to Joe Baker and group of Sevier County natives and became Ober Mountain.
